Kim Ruttan-Selbee
With a love of horses and an admiration for equine artists such as Charlie Russell, George Stubbs, Alfred Munnings, and C.W. Anderson, Kim seeks to portray the complexity, courage, and glory of the horse through her artwork. Though working in a variety of mediums she finds that graphite best allows her to render detail to a satisfying degree, and so uses this medium as her mainstay. Based out of Calgary, she spends much of her time actively gathering references and inspiration from the small-town farms and ranches of Alberta and British Columbia, where the traditions of the West are still a part of daily life. Though mainly self-taught Kim has also attended various art classes and workshops in the past, and has previously focused on commission work, as well as exhibiting work in both group and solo shows in and around Calgary. Her work was accepted into the Calgary Stampede’s Art Auction in 2009. Kim and her husband McGarry reside in Calgary, Alberta. They have three grown daughters, all of whom are actively involved in the Calgary and Vancouver art scenes.
